Terrorism Debated at Pizza and Politics Night

10.30.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 3rd Mar 2006

Borrowing the idea from discussion and debating groups the world over, Ashford Liberal Democrats held their first 'Pizza and Politics' night at the Willesborough Windmill on the evening of March 3rd.

After a sumptuous meal of pizza, side dishes and desserts the politics kicked off with a lively debate on whether the fight against terrorism could justify the erosion of human rights.

One of the first issues to be discussed was Guantanamo Bay - should it be closed? Can torture be justified to extract information from the perpetrators of horrific crimes? Should those held without charge be released? The debate was lively and good natured with a number of 'devils advocate' responses to really get members talking.

As the object of the evening was to 'get people talking' and they certainly did, it was felt more discussion evenings would be a good idea.

Ashford Liberal Democrats raised over £125 profit for party funds whilst a collection 'bucket' for WaterAid raised £50.

Warmest thanks to Jill Norris, Mary, and Claire Hardwick, all of whom helped to make the evening a tremendous success.
