Make Your Vote Count9.44.59am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 2nd May 2007 Turnout for the local elections in England on Thursday is likely to be around 30-40%. Across the UK a number of councillors will not be facing an election because they have been elected 'unopposed' i.e. only one party put forward a candidate and so they are elected without facing a public vote. In Ashford almost every seat is contested and, in most, the contest is between the ruling Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats. As well as trying to ensure that the local electorate has a choice at the ballot box the Liberal Democrats in Ashford have focused their election campaign on councillors who we feel are not serving their community the way that they should. Serving the community means holding a 'surgery' once a month so the electorate can speak to their councillor face to face. Serving the community means regular leaflets, not just at election time. Serving the community means standing up for the area you represent in the council chamber, not sitting on your hands. If you do have a vote on Thursday then of course we hope you will vote Liberal Democrat. But, even if you are not supporting us, at the very least, we do hope you vote.
